Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) and Red Valley Day Trip
The Vilcanota Mountain Range, located southeast of Cusco, is a spectacular section of the Peruvian Andes known for its high concentration of snow-capped peaks and massive glaciers. As these glaciers have receded over time, they have revealed a unique natural wonder: mountains with vibrant, multi-colored mineral pigments. This geological phenomenon, combined with the presence of local Andean communities—dedicated alpaca and llama herders—makes this trek a truly unforgettable cultural and scenic experience.
Hiking to the summit of Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) at 5,020 meters (16,470 feet) is a bucket-list adventure. For those seeking even more stunning views, the nearby Red Valley offers a Martian-like landscape of intense crimson earth. Breathe deeply, embrace the high-altitude challenge, and witness the incredible natural colors that have made this destination world-famous.
01. Cusco to Cusipata: Breakfast and Scenic Drive Your adventure begins early! We will pick you up from your hotel between 3:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. to start a 2-hour drive toward the south of Cusco. Our first stop is the village of Cusipata, where you will enjoy a delicious local breakfast to gain the energy needed for the trek.
02. Phulawasipata: The Trailhead After breakfast, we continue for another hour to Phulawasipata (4,626 m / 15,177 ft). This is the official trailhead. Here, the landscape transforms into high-altitude tundra. As we begin the 1.5 to 2-hour uphill hike, you’ll witness the daily life of the local Andean people in their traditional clothing, alongside herds of Alpacas, Llamas, and if you are lucky, wild Vicuñas.
03. The Summit: Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain Upon reaching the summit of Vinicunca (5,020 m / 16,469 ft), you will be rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree view of the "Mountain of Seven Colors." You will have plenty of free time to rest, take photos, and soak in the majesty of the Ausangate glacier in the distance.
04. The Red Valley Experience: A Unique Descent To make your trip unforgettable, we descend via the Red Valley. This route is famous for its vibrant crimson soil and surreal landscapes. Since fewer tourists take this path, it offers a more peaceful and "off-the-beaten-path" experience. This downhill trek takes approximately 2.5 hours until we reach our transportation in Phulawasipata.
05. Return to Cusco After the hike, we head back to Cusipata for a well-deserved, comforting lunch. Finally, we return to Cusco, arriving between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Due to local traffic regulations, we will drop you off one block from the Main Square (Plaza de Armas).
For this hike we organize tours every day, for this reason we recommend the passengers stay at least one whole day in Cusco to Acclimatize, this is a prerequisite to go on this tour because you start to walk over 4600mts (15091 fts) and the summit is over 5020mts (16469 fts)
